Prelude to AYWOC
As promised, I did start another project, this one I am not modeling in, however! It is called Deck of Hats, scheduled to last about a year, with a new hat and photo set coming out every week(ish) to showcase some of my new works! Please check out my Tumblr page, I think I have 8 followers :-) So excited about the weeks and months ahead!!!
Thanks to everyone who showered us with lots of love n support over the last year. This project has been life changing, to say the least. We set out hoping for some inspiration, and to evolve along our creative paths with a bit of a kick start. Without a doubt we got that, and more!!! As Day 365 approached, we realized there was not a single thing we could shoot that would embody the entirety of this project. We had about a million ideas, but they all seemed contrived. So we leave you longing for more, and a bit disappointed… there is no final image. Lucky and I are both eager to start some new projects, and we will announce those here once we set up the domains! I would like to thank, however, in order of appearance, the cast and crew of this epic photo journal. So here goes… in order of appearance :-)
THANK YOU TOOOOO……….
Lucky Bastard aka Keith Allen Philips, photographer extraordinaire, one of my favorite roommates ever, an amazing shoulder to lean on, and a creative force to be reckoned with. Lucky always has been and always will be one of my favorite photographers, his ability to capture the moment and perfectly preserve the essence of time never ceases to amaze me.
Pillar Box Studios, whose walls have housed me and whose sets have helped me make rent this past year. My home, palace, and art studio.
Whiskey, who tortured me so and eventually freed me of it’s addictive bind. Thank you for all the painful lessons, you terrible temptress.
Minnie Mouse. You are the kinkiest cartoon ever.
Rachel Sigmon of Posh Fairy Tale Couture was generous enough to loan us numerous epic pieces to shoot for this project. Her taste for the dramatic speaks to my inner drag queen, and her costuming is definitely among the most photogenic ever.
Never More Create, an etsy designer, was generous enough to trade me one of her awesome crocheted outfits, pink and red and delicious.
Marilyn of Adorned Immortal, soul sister, morbid designer, and friend till the end. Marilyn will always be one of my favorite people and artists! I love you lovely lady! Marilyn has an unparalleled ability to find bones out in the woods and intertwine them with wire and chain until they become a beautiful piece of jewelry. Her macabre disposition is reflected in her voodoo queen appearance!
Alexia, Adam, and Patrick, some of my favorite friends, and the first to make cameos on my site before our night out to the Magic Castle. It seems so so so long ago! Alexia later did some makeup for me and I am looking forward to having her as a HUGE contributor to my next project as well! She is one of the most talented makeup artists I have ever met, fast and detail oriented and flawless at beauty of extravagant looks.
That weird dummy we found in the trash… Much later in the year this dude I was dating was looking for something under my bed and found his dismembered figure. Aaah, how it was all worth it, just for that moment!
David Weiser, one of my oldest friends, who I have known since high school. Thanks you for the genius purchase of my JOE MAMMA shirt. I didn’t “get it” at first… but I love it now!
Chrissy Fargo, with whom there is never a dull moment. Whether it is flogging me, juicing with me, doing yoga, or late night chats, her personality can handle it. It’s like there’s more than one woman living in that body.
Banana dong. You liberate me.
Caley of Miss G Designs, one of the most inspiring people I have ever met. Caley’s attention to detail in her creations is paralleled, her passion for making headdresses of an endless variety constantly amazes me. When I met Caley, it was as though I had been reunited with a long lost sister. We have the oddest and longest list of similarities and mirrored life experiences. It is no wonder we met in the feather shoppe, she ended up coming to all of my yoga classes, and is a most cherished soul mate. I love her, am intimidated by her, and look forward to a life long friendship of forever evolving aspirations.
Paul Roustan, my favorite body painter. Never was such a talented man so down to earth, there is no BS in his inspired approach to making art. I met him shortly after moving into Pillar Box Studios and have been fortunate enough to have him paint me a number of times since. We always manage to make up some silly song, catch phrase, or inside joke that carries into our next bi-coastal visit.
Fables by Barrie, a vintage bathing suit designer, makes me feel like a pin up cartoon when I wear her super incredibly made retro attire.
Censorship is Un-American, censorship is All American
The Dink and Selene, my little dogs. You guys drive me mad, and I love you. Although the Dink has moved on to a new home, I love that little fucker. Selene is a friend till the end, loyal and annoying.
America. Where all your dreams come true.
The Pinata District, located conveniently a few blocks from my house, is full of child induced inspirations. My dinosaur pinata was a favorite, he is barely standing now but hanging on for dear life.
Meditation, which was introduced into my life this past year, has continually given me an expanding perspective on my life and the world around me. Taught “energy consciousness by Patrick Dinkfeld, I am still such an amateur but loving every experience I have. I know that when I keep up with my practice the world around me is less frightening, and the magic of the world glows forever stronger.
America the Clown Face, found by David and Vanessa at at garage sale, so perfectly mirrored my alter ego that it’s creepy. Who is the artist who created this awful piece of art, and why aren’t we married?
Tom Dead Stuff, creator of pinatas and other morbid art. A truly EPIC paper mache artist, who ever thought they would hear those words paired together? I love his art, dark and creepy and ever so inappropriate.
Jill Fogel, who transformed me into a 100 year old woman. One of the creepiest shoots we ever did, my face said 100 and my body said 30. Have you ever heard of an acid nightmare?
My tiny snap shot camera, with whom I began my first self portrait experiences. This little camera was very simple in design, and I had to push the timer button then run in front of the lens. Often my photos came out blurry, but the result was magical, in that I learned to do photography. I am still super amateur, but looking forward to expanding my skills this coming year!
Yosemite National Park, whose inspiring landscape is burned into my soul by a week long backpacking adventure with my pal Matthew Ramos.
Marco Turrubairtes, an amazing painter and leather crafter, who I knew was a creative soul mate the moment we met in the blistering sun upon the Queen Mary in Long Beach. He is an artistic force whose tireless ability to make shit happen impresses and inspires me. Not to mention he draws boobies on skeletons. Yes, that’s right, red lipped big breasted skeletons are a memorable part of his deathly artistic endeavors.
Unicorns. You carry me through life.
Sugar Pill Cosmetics, creators of the most intense rainbow pigments, and most dazzling lashed. Their choice of color palette speaks to my inner drag queen.
Beautiful V Nixie, a friend till the end and stunning fairy like creature, who was the first woman to disrobe with me for this project during a trip we took to the mountains for a weekend camp out. When I need help, she is always there. When I need fun, she is always there. I love that little wood nymph!
Mykal Binds, thank you for helping me figure out how to use my Canon camera, which I was struggling to do while on my camping trip. The camera was so new to me then that I was unable to properly set it, and as the sun was setting quickly one evening, he came to the rescue with advice and patience.
Kyle, who made the summer heat bearable.
Pamela Barber, who let me wear her beautiful wig for a shoot!
Andrez Diaz, who has been pushing me to start photographing other people for a long time, and a supportive fellow artist for more than a decade. As my life has evolved, he is one of those rare friends who has evolved in the same direction. Not to mention he is a talented designer and photographer, two things that speak to my heart.
Roxanne, a grounding friend and creative comrade, best friend till the end, woman of chameleon qualities who models my hats like a debutante, and manages to stay sane while the world spins out of control around her. When I am feeling off kilter, I can always call her to snap me back into reality, and while she listens to my woes, she offers no nonsense advice when I need it.
Oliver, the greatest cat that ever was!!! A tormented of all, and friend of many.
Julian, who never says no when I say please, and has helped me in ever so many ways, house sitting, airbrush artistry, and fine meal preparation!
Jessie James Locarnini, who got one of the images from this project tattooed on her by John Paul Seger.
Stephanie, who was generous enough to adorn my head in impeccably delicious makeup and hair for a shoot with Red Rum Collaboration. And Red Rum COllaboration, for showing up at my doorstep full of fun ideas!
Jesse and Robert, both friends of many many years, and willing to text while I lay naked across their laps. Real pals I tell you!!!
Sandra, who adopted the Dink, will always be a life saver in my mind.
Jared Tate, the hottest neighbor a girl could hope for. An artist whose spirit speaks to mine, whose beautiful jewelry and body harnesses are of the most superb and elegant quality. He is like a kitten whose purr brings me back to earth.
Tony, creator of my most prized possession, the beautiful fire chandelier which casts a magic glow of ambiance across the romantic evenings of my life. I love when an artist has the passion to create something unusual, and with attention to every detail. Plus, his art is dangerous, a quality which I love in a man! Mmmmm!!!
Roxy Contin, my sister from another mister, and decadently adorned super heroine. Sweet enough to donate a raunchy romper for me to raunchily romp around in :-)
Moon and Dean Ryan, my boyfriend and girlfriend, captors of my heart, friends from my past and into my future. These two came along when I was looking for a nice monogamous boyfriend and somehow convinced me that what I really needed was a nice three way romance. They are my muses, my stability, and my hearts desire, forever changed am I by these two kindred spirits, who adore me for my good parts and tolerate my bad parts.
Angela Zin Kitty Twinkle Toes, who makes a damed cute Santa Clause :-)
Shark Face, shark face, you’re the one, you make bath time lots of fun!
Rant, who inexplicably gifted me some beautiful birthday garments, including a corset by Louise Black. She is a fabulous designer herself, creating photogenic garments!
Aliya Kalypso Choudhery, who collaborated with me on an epic henna art/ headdress collaboration. Her henna art continually awes me, and her passion for artistic endeavors radiates through all of her creations, whether it be body art or wearable trinkets. She has generously agreed to collaborate with me on my upcoming project as well, look for images from that coming up soooooooon!
Ming Vauz, who let me photograph him… naked. Musician and now, fellow nude model! ha!!!
Michael Helms, who recently gave me my very own camera, a Canon 5D. Before that I had been borrowing one from my dear studio mate, but Michael was kind in gifting me one of my own. I met Michael modeling for him years ago but we have since become friends of a deeper nature, he is such a caring loving talented beautiful man, forever in my life I shall cherish him. Words cannot describe the love we share.
Ophelia Overdose and Moritz Maibaum, model and photographer. Both incredibly inspired people who have visited the US a couple times this past year. Ophelia is an amazing creator of costumes, head pieces and an artful retoucher as well. She is super young but going strong along her creative path, for which I admire her greatly! Mo is a rad photographer, set builder, and retoucher as well. When the two of them pair up it is as though magic has graced the photos. They pay meticulous attention to every detail, costuming makeup, hair, environment, and post production!
Royal Black Couture Corsetry, whose beautiful creations I have longingly lusted for, and whose decadent wares I was lucky enough to robe myself in just once!
I guess I should add my two cents here as well even though Sylva covered all the thank you’s very thoroughly.
I’ll keep it short and sweet. Sylva is the most interesting, loving, creative person I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. And that’s saying a lot considering some of our shared friends, but it’s the absolute truth as I see it. I would never have even attempted such an ambitious project with anyone else. We may not have done exactly what we set out to(and that would be entirely my fault for moving out only three months into the project) but I still couldn’t be happier with what we created.
So thank you everyone for all the love and encouragement you gave us and hopefully we’ll see you around:)One more thing before I go… In a very strange coincidence, the last day of this project also happened to be the 6th anniversary of the very first time I shot photos of Sylva. Who knew where that would go?
REALLY NOW. THE END.
Day #362 part C
When I told Lucky that I couldn’t figure out why no one has bought this beautiful headdress yet, he promptly clarified to me that it is not as nice as my others. It looks like an old vintage grandma hat, all flowery. My other stuff is apparently more magnificent. The wonderful thing about such blunt honesty is that when someone of this verbal caliber compliments you, you know they mean it. No sugar coating from Lucky, he tells it like it is.
The days of this project are nearly over, this is in fact the last Tuesday we shall shoot for this creative venture. We are BAFFLED by what to do for our final shoot. We have set the stakes pretty fricken high, you know??????? FUUUUUCK. And ideas? Someone have a unicorn I can ride?
Day #362 part B
A few months ago I ordered this orange and gold kimono, fantasizing that it would be as soft and sumptuous as my vintage one. Such is not the case, it feels more like a Brillo pad. Scratchy, stiff, and super hideous to the touch. Kinda like someone set a normal kimono on fire, then sold it as new. Ebay for the win~~~~ Online shopping is not for the faint of heart.
Day #362 part A
It seems each of these epic shoot days has a vibe, today’s was decadence!! One of my favorite themes, I fancy myself an elegant enchantress of most seductive powers, galavanting about town on ponies and man drawn carriages That’s right, man drawn carriages, you did not read wrong. I would have horse bits in their sumptuous mouths and reigns upon their bulging muscular, oil lathered, barren shoulders. Giddy-up!
These first shots are showcasing this absolutely decadent outfit by Royal Black Couture Corsetry (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Royal-Black-Couture-Corsetry and http://royalblack.at/). I have lusted longingly for their beautiful wares. Although I will doubtful ever be able to afford these creations, I was delighted that the beautiful Ophelia Overdose (http://ophelia-overdose.blogspot.com/) had brought along her golden robot themed outfit and was generous enough to let me wear it. Truly a work of art, every detail was attended to, the seams perfect, the quality magnificent, and the fit superb. Anyone who has worn a fine corset knows the difference, well made ones can be cinched super tight without discomfort. Swooooon… I am more in love with Barbara Pesendorfer’s custom creations than ever before!
We are rapidly approaching the first ever Fashion Photography Event here at Pillar Box Studios and I am eagerly anticipating all the beautiful images that will result from this epic shoot day! Myself and some fellow artists have collected an amazing team of 5 hot models, super rad makeup and hair, delectable wardrobe and headdresses, a photography guru here to assist with tech stuffs, a whole lotta lights, and my rainbow delight photo studio. We are selling a total of 10 slots to aspiring fashion photographers who want to partake in this wonderful opportunity of portfolio building creative madness. March 2nd is rapidly approaching, and we are almost sold out. Contact me for details or to secure a spot!!!
All this shooting these past few days really put me behind, so I took a one day hiatus and got some hats made :-) This image is taken from the downstairs closet of my craft room, where all the trinkets, feathers, fabrics, bones, and headdresses that are in transition to the upstairs closet are stored. I sit over by those rainbow windows all day, every day, so long as I am lucky :-) Speaking of Lucky (man do I crack myself up)… Lucky is headed here tomorrow for some more power shooting~!! Looking forward to creative outbursts, camera malfunctions, and late night yoga.
Day #360 part C
And finally, and most excitedly, I painted myself in gold and got to wear this beautiful hat that I had made for a photo shoot recently. The shoot was cancelled and the spectacular hat was left neglected:( But alas, Lucky took these fricken rad shots, which remind me of the laughing Buddah!! hhhaahaaaaaa!!!
